NEST 2025 CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS: FROM NASPA-CCN TO CLIMATE CHANGE ACT

The NEST 2025 Conference Proceedings, published by the Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team (NEST), document the pivotal discourse from the conference held on May 22-23, 2025, at the National Universities Commission (NUC) Auditorium in Abuja. Themed "From NASPA-CCN to Climate Change Act: Mapping the Pathway beyond 2030 towards Sustainable Development in Nigeria," this volume serves as a critical repository of research, policy analysis, and practical strategies for advancing Nigeria's climate and sustainability agenda.

This proceedings captures the collective expertise of academics, policymakers, and practitioners, presenting a multidisciplinary exploration of climate change governance, adaptation, and mitigation in Nigeria. The keynote address by Dr. Peter Tarfa sets the stage by tracing the evolution of Nigeria’s climate governance from the pioneering National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action on Climate Change (NASPA-CCN), spearheaded by NEST, to the legal framework established by the Climate Change Act 2021. The volume features 20 peer-reviewed papers that examine a wide spectrum of critical issues including:

Climate Governance & Policy: Advancing institutional frameworks and stakeholder roles in climate action.

Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security: Climate-proofing agricultural practices, evaluating the efficacy of organic fertilizers, and building resilience in crop production.

Energy Transitions & Emissions: Examining grassroots adoption of LPG for small businesses and modelling the impacts of technology and energy consumption on environmental sustainability.

Ecosystem & Land Management: Studies on carbon sequestration in forest reserves, land-use changes, and the impact of urbanisation on local climates.

Environmental Health & Safety: Investigating health risks from food processing methods and the antibacterial potential of natural plant extracts.

Innovations in Governance & Technology: Introducing tools like "GovOptix-NG" for optimising governance costs and applying AI to climate modelling.

The proceedings underscore the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development. They highlight the indispensable role of non-state actors like NEST in bridging research and action, and the urgent need for inclusive policies that empower local communities and foster a just and resilient transition to a low-carbon economy. This collection is an essential resource for environmental scientists, climate change experts, agriculturalists, policymakers, and all stakeholders committed to achieving Nigeria's sustainable development goals and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) beyond 2030.
